Interpretive Program

Back to Education Programs

The Interpretive Program provides schools with the opportunity to walk around the grounds in groups and be greeted by costumed volunteers in a variety of MHV’s heritage buildings. Students will experience how life was lived in late 19th-century Mennonite villages by exploring the themes of Migration, Early Settlement Life, Home, School, and Work.

Available: May, June, and September.

Grades: K-12

Time: Programming runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Cost: $8/student, 120 students maximum

Potential Experiences:

  • Visit an underground sod house called a Semlin
  • Walk through the Choritz Housebarn and learn why Mennonites built their houses attached to their barns
  • Experience what a Private Mennonite school was like
  • Discover Canada’s only fully functioning, wind-powered grist mill
  • Visit the blacksmith shop

All stations are volunteer-run. Please note that no station is guaranteed until confirmed by MHV staff before your tour date.
